Someone to turn to
Imagine if there were someone in your career who you could turn to for advice – when you’re stuck, when you’re confused or when you need the motivation to take that next step? Someone who would be willing to give up chunks of their time to share their wisdom and expertise with you, who you could be honest and open with and who cared as much about your success as you do?
That person is a mentor, and it’s the subject of today’s podcast.
A mentor is not a sponsor
A mentor forms part of what I like to call the magic ‘rolemodel-mentor-sponsor’ trio that can be a game changer for your career. Between them they will give you all the inspiration, advice and opportunities you need. Many people confuse a mentor with a sponsor, but they are not the same thing. A mentor’s prime quality is his or her ability to advise you. A sponsor’s prime responsibility is to use their influence to open doors for you.
Don’t go it alone
However committed, brilliant and hard working you are, when it comes to progressing your career while growing a family, don’t try to go it alone. There are people around you who have years worth of experience, knowledge and skills that could help you move forward. And many of them would be more than willing to share these with you and support you going forward, so long as you are the right fit and you know how to ask.
Coming up in this podcast:
- What is a mentor and how is it different to a sponsor?
- How do I ask someone to be my mentor?
- How to build a successful mentoring relationship
- Informal vs formal mentoring
- How do I get the most out of a mentoring relationship?
